"For Research Use Only" is a real regulatory designation. In the United States it marks a class of laboratory product — reagents, instruments, assays — sold in the earliest stage of an investigational pipeline, and expressly not reviewed, cleared, or approved as an in-vitro diagnostic device. The label is a boundary: it declares that whatever the object does, it is not doing it to a patient, and that the manufacturer has therefore not been asked to prove that it works.

In practice the boundary is porous. A large volume of clinical testing runs on components that carry the RUO mark, because the mark lets a product reach the bench without the years and cost of diagnostic device review. The manufacturer often knows the likely end use, the buyer proceeds regardless, and the three words on the box distribute the resulting liability neatly onto whoever peeled the label off last. The phrase does very little to the object and a great deal to the paperwork.

It is, functionally, liability laundering: a legend that changes not what a thing is, but who is answerable for what it becomes.

We find this instructive, and portable. Applied to a reagent, the phrase is unremarkable. Applied to a banana, a marriage, or a sovereign nation, it does exactly the same work — it removes the object from the world of consequences and files it under "not our problem" — while making the mechanism impossible to overlook. The sticker is the argument. The certificate is the footnote.
